On May 1st, 2007, the City of Fort Saskatchewan's Bylaw Services Department became known as the City of Fort Saskatchewan Municipal Enforcement Services. The name change came as a result of legislative changes created by the Province of Alberta that came into effect May 1st and the City of  Fort Saskatchewan has been very pro-active in adhering to the new mandate and the changes.

As a City of Fort Saskatchewan Department, the Municipal Enforcement Service continues to respond to public requests for service and enforces Municipal Bylaws and select Provincial Statutes. The Community Peace Officers or Officers, as they are now known, were formerly designated as Special Constables and are still employees of the City. They have been appointed to enforce Municipal Bylaws under the authority of the Municipal Government Act of Alberta and appointed by the Solicitor General of Alberta as Community Peace Officers under authority of the the Police Act of Alberta.

The Department maintains a strong relationship with the RCMP and works out of the Fort Saskatchewan RCMP Detachment utilizing a collaborative enforcement model.  Their duties include enforcement of but not limited to:
- the Traffic Safety Act of Alberta including photo laser enforcement, speeding and seat
   belt infractions;
- the Gaming and Liquor Act,
- the Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act,
- the Prevention of Youth Tobacco Use Act,
- the Weed Act and
- the Provincial Offences Procedure Act.

The Municipal Enforcement Services Department also enforces a series of Municipal Bylaws which include but are not limited to:

- Traffic
- Noise
- Parklands
- Land Use
- Nuisance and Unsightly Premises
- Animal Control
- Business License

As an enhanced service, the Department not only enforces the City's Bylaws but they also provide a year round, contracted Animal Control service, Bike Patrols in the summer and Off Highway Vehicle enforcement, in the winter.

The Municipal Enforcement Officers, who are all Peace Officers, as defined in the Criminal Code of Canada while engaged in the performance of their duties are are also committed to the mission and core service values of the City of Fort Saskatchewan.

As a Department, the Municipal Enforcement Services, main objective is to provide for a safe community by ensuring that the protection of public safety and property through enforcement of the City's Bylaws and selected Provincial Statutes is conducted in a professional and expedient manner and that all public complaints are dealt with accordingly.
