The fire pit permit complete with site plan must be applied for and approved prior to commencing construction of a fire pit.  Permits may be obtained at the Fire Hall.  The permit fee is $10.00.

Process:

  • Fire pit permits can be issued to homeowners onlyRenters, you must obtain written documentation from the owner addressed to the Fire Department agreeing to a fire pit being built on their property.
  • Permit Fee - $ 10.00.
  • Site plan - detailed drawing of the property showing the location of the fire pit and measurements from any adjacent, buildings/fencing/deck or other combustible objects. 
  • Construction Design -A drawing of or a brochure on style, type and material used for the fire pit construction. (Note: Some portable fire pits are acceptable but they must be permanently located on the area designated on the approved site drawing.)

Building a Fire Pit: 

City of Fort Saskatchewan Bylaw No. C5-00 and Guidelines, which include the following conditions:

  • 3 meters between any structure including but not limited to a fence, or deck, trees or shrubs, from the eave of the nearest building, including but not limited to garage, sheds or house and the closest edge of fire pit.
  • Covered with heavy gauge metal spark retention screen having a mesh size no larger than 13 millimeters.
  • The fire pit is for the purpose of cooking or obtaining warmth, not for refuse disposal.
  • Fires in pit may only be fueled with dry wood, charcoal, coal, natural gas or propane. If using natural gas or propane, owner must provide the Safety Codes Office in the Fire Discipline with proof of an approved gas inspection by a Safety Codes Officer in the Gas Discipline.

A final inspection must be completed on the fire pit and have received approval from a Safety Codes Officer in the Fire Discipline. Contact Fort Saskatchewan Fire Department at 998-4858 for your final inspection.

Safety First – when using your fire pit:

  • Winds not to exceed 25 km/h.
  • Person (18 years of age or older) shall be in attendance at all times fire is burning.
